PACK MENTALITY is a dog's innate sense of social rank and the structure of communication that supports this rank structure. It's a way of life for dogs; it's how they perceive and interpret the world, and us. You (and your household) are your dog's pack. Every dog in a canine pack has a job/position. Dogs as a species are pack oriented. Instinct programs lead them to lead or be led; to follow the strongest, most balanced (mental) energy in the pack. If you, as owner, are not projecting this energy, then your dog will take the position as pack leader. Most dogs are designed to follow a leader, not be a leader. When these dogs try to lead themselves, they often become unbalanced. In order for a dog to be balanced and fulfilled, he/she needs a balanced leader who fulfills him.
